May, 2008

On May 10, 2008, Maestro Joel Levine conducted the Oklahoma City Philharmonic in a performance of "Toccata for Orchestra".

Pat Hughes performed "The Glass Bead Game" on May 2, 2008 with the University of Texas Wind Symphony in Austin, TX.  Rob Carnochan was conducting. 

The San Antonio Symphony played "The American Dream" four times in May on the following dates:

5/21 in Boerne, TX
5/22 in Bandera, TX
5/23 in Cibolo, TX
5/25 in San Antonio, TX

Susan Kitterman conducted the New World Youth Orchestra of Indianapolis in a performance of "The American Dream" on May 18, 2008 at the Hilbert Circle Theater at 3:00.

The Kansas City Symphony played "Liberty for All" under the direction of Michael Stern at the 'Celebration at the Station' concert on May 25, 2008.  

On May 25, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra performed "Gardens of Stone" with Neal Gittleman conducting.  

John Strickler conducted the Gulf Coast Symphony in two performances of "Gardens of Stone" on May 24 and May 25, 2008.

The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic performed "Gardens of Stone" on their Salute! concert led by Dr. David Bowden on May 23, 2008.

April, 2008

Larry Williams performed "The Glass Bead Game" with the Peabody Wind Ensemble on April 9, 2008.  Dr. Harlan Parker was conducting.

The Carmel, IN Symphony, led by David Bowden, performed "Make a Joyful Noise" on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

March, 2008

Harvey Benstein conducted the Walnut Creek Concert Band in a performance of "Liberty for All" in March, 2008.

"The Glass Bead Game" was played by Larry Williams and the Loudoun Symphony on March 8 at Dominion High School and March 9, 2008 at the Loudoun County High School.  Mark Allen McCoy was conducting.

The brass choir at the Boston Conservatory performed "Musica Mobilis" on March 8, 2008.

The DePauw University Band performed "Music for Winds, Piano, and Percussion" on March 9, 2008, under the direction of Craig Pare.  They have included this work on their most recent CD.

February, 2008

The "Sonata for Trumpet and Organ" was performed by Dr. Heather Hinton and Daniel Golando on February 17, 2008 at the Pipedreams Live! concert at St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Kent Leslie performed "Primitive Modern" in Fishers, IN on February 24, 2008.

Kirk Muspratt and the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra performed "Liberty for All" for school concerts on February 26 and 27, 2008.

Dr. Jeffrey Renshaw led the University of Connecticut Wind Ensemble in a performance of "The Glass Bead Game" on February 28, 2008.  Robert Hoyle was the soloist.

January, 2008

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra performed "Fantasy after Schubert" on their concerts on January 10 and 12, 2008, along with Schubert's Symphony No. 9.  Neal Gittleman was conducting.

December, 2007

In addition to "A Gospel Christmas Medley", North Carolina also played "Amazing Grace" on their December 22, 2007 concert.

The Lone Star Wind Orchestra, Under the direction of Frank Troyka, performed the brass choir version of "A Christmas Fanfare" on December 16, 2007.

November, 2007

The Walnut Creek Concert Band performed "Liberty for All" on November 11, 2007.  Harvey Benstein was conducting.

The Cedar Rapids Symphony, under the direction of Tim Hankewich, played "Waltz of the Animals" for two Discovery concerts on November 3, 2007."

On November 11, 2007, the Oakland Youth Orchestra performed the brass choir version of "Musica Mobilis" under the direction of Brian Nies.

Musical Masque (for the Seasons)" is a chamber work inspired by the James Whitcomb Riley poem entitled Masque of the Seasons.  The Peaceful Valley Chamber Players performed it on Sunday, November 18, in the atrium of the Indiana University Art Museum to honor the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Brown County Art Colony by T.C. Steele in 1907.

October, 2007

The Virginia Symphony played "Toccata for Orchestra" on a concert featuring Joshua Bell on October 4, 2007, with Maestro JoAnn Falletta conducting.

Maestro Thomas Wilkins led the Omaha Symphony in a performance of "Toccata for Orchestra" on October 5 and 6, 2007.

Wayne Feller conducted the Star of the North Concert Band in a performance of the first movement of "The Glass Bead Game" at the Edinborough Indoor Park in Edina, MN on October 21, 2007 at 7:00 PM and will also perform it in mid-November.  The guest soloist is Rob Schmitke.

September, 2007

Maestro Alfred Savia and the Evansville Philharmonic performed "Toccata for Orchestra" on September 15, 2007.

The Dayton Philharmonic and the Air Force Band of Flight combined to perform "Liberty for All" at their concert at the Air Force Museum on September 8, 2007.  Neal Gittleman was conducting.

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra played "Liberty for All" on September 2 and September 15, 2007 with Kirk Muspratt conducting.

Alliszon Zaichowski, a graduate student at the University of Calgary, performed "The Glass Bead Game" with Dr. Glenn Price and the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble during the fall, exact date unknown.

The Peaceful Valley Chamber Players performed "Musical Masque (for the Seasons)" at the University of Indianapolis on September 24, 2007.

June, 2007

Dan Golando premiered "Sonata for Trumpet and Organ" at the Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis on June 24, 2007.  This piece was written for natural trumpet.

Future Performances

June, 2008

The Fairfax Symphony Orchestra will perform "Liberty for All" on their final concert of the season, June 14, 2008, as part of their International Heritage Series.

Maestro Tsung Yeh will lead the South Bend Symphony in a performance of "Liberty for All" at their Blast! concert on June 28, 2008 in the St. Patrick's Count Park at 8:00 PM.

July, 2008

The Missouri Symphony Orchestra will perform "Liberty for All" on July 5, 2008, with Kirk Trevor conducting.

Dr. Robert Tomaro will lead the Beloit Janesville Symphony in two performances of "Liberty for All" on July 3 and July 4, 2008.

The Fort Worth Symphony will play "Liberty for All" at three performances with Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducting.  The concerts are held in the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens and are on July 2, 3, and 4, 2008. 

"Gardens of Stone" will be played by the Duluth Superior Symphony (MN) on July 4 and July 5, 2008 with Markand Thakar conducting.

Daniel Hege will conduct the Syracuse Symphony in multiple performances of "Gardens of Stone" in July, 2008.

The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform "Liberty for All" on July 4, 2008 in Centennial Park.  Jere Flint is conducting.

Brass members from the Vallejo Symphony will perform "Musica Mobilis" for brass choir on July 4, 2008.  The conductor is David Ramadanoff.

Thomas Wilkins will lead the Utah Symphony in a performance of "Toccata for Orchestra" on April 17 and April 18, 2009.

Past Performances

May, 2007

The Broward Youth Chamber Orchestra in Ft. Lauderdale performed "The Glass Bead Game" on May 20, 2007 in the Dillard Center for the Arts Concert Hall and the soloist was the winner of the Concerto Competition, Jaclyn Perez.  The conductor was Bradford Chase.

On May 31, 2007 at 7:00 PM, the Citrus Wind Symphony in Riverside County, CA performed the band version of "Liberty for All" on their patriotic concert titled Let Freedom Ring.  The concert, conducted by Stephen Razo, was at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.

April, 2007

The Columbus Indiana Philharmonic performed "Make a Joyful Noise" on their concert in Erne Auditorium on April 28, 2007 with David Bowden conducting.

The Wichita Symphony performed "Waltz of the Animals" April 17, 18, and 19, 2007.  Maestro Jay Decker was conducting.

Tim Hankewich directed the brass choir made up of members of the Cedar Rapids Symphony in a performance of "Musica Mobilis" at their spring chamber concert at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Jim Beckel and Jared Rodin performed "Lament for Two Trombones" at DePauw University on April 25, 2007.

March, 2007

Jeff Nelsen, horn soloist, performed "The Glass Bead Game" with The Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra's Wind Symphony on March 11, 2007 at 2:00 PM in the Caruth Auditorium at the SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, TX.

The Naples Philharmonic performed "The American Dream" on March 17, 2007 at Gazebo at the Brooks, Estero, FL.  Matthew Savery was conducting.

The World Premier of "Toccata for Orchestra" was played on a Classical Subscription pair by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra on March 16 and March 17, 2007.  Maestro Mario Venzago conducted this premier and the audience was very enthusiastic.

On March 18, 2007, the Peaceful Valley Chamber Players performed the World Premier of "Musical Masque (for the Seasons)" at the Nashville United Methodist Church in Nashville, IN as part of Nashville's Centennial Celebration.  This piece is interspersed with one of James Whitcomb Riley's poems, "A Masque of the Seasons."

February, 2007

The Illinois Symphony played a Side-by-Side concert with the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony in an Educational Concert led by Karen Deal on 
February 6 and 7, 2007.  They performed "Waltz of the Animals."

The Johnstown Symphony performed "Liberty for All" on November 11, 2006.  Istvan Jaray was on the podium.

October, 2006

The Indianapolis Chamber Winds, Darin Sorley, Music Director, played the World Premier of "Music for Winds, Piano and Percussion" on October 19, 2006 at the University of Indianapolis.

Matthew Savery directed the Naples Philharmonic on October 29, 2006, when they performed "The American Dream".

"Liberty for All" was played by The Harrisburg Symphony, conducted by Stuart Malina, on October 28 and October 29, 2006 for their Pops concert. 

On October 22, Dr. Wayne Bennett led the University of Oregon Symphony Orchestra in a performance of "Fantasy after Schubert".

The Missouri University Faculty Brass Quintet performed "Freedom's Hope" at the Odyssey Benefit Gala Concert on October 6, 2006.

"Liberty for All" was played twice by the Virginia Symphony.  JoAnn Falletta  led the orchestra September 1, 2006  and on September 3, 2006.

July, 2006

The United States Air Force Band in Washington, DC performed "Liberty for All" on July 25, 2006 on the US Capitol Steps and July 28, 2006 at the Sylvan Theatre located at the base of the Washington Monument.  These concerts were conducted by Capt. Michael Willen.

May, 2006

On May 5 and May 6, 2006, Caity Stuart, a graduating horn student at Highland High School, performed the first movement of "The Glass Bead Game" with the Highland High School Band under the directorship of Douglas Fletcher.  Caity studied horn with Suzanne Rice.

April, 2006

Jeff Nelsen, horn soloist, performed the band version of "The Glass Bead Game" with the University of Ottawa Wind Ensemble in Tabaret Hall on April 10, 2006 in a concert conducted by Daniel Gress.

On April 5, 2006, Pat Boone narrated a performance of "Liberty for All" with the Pepperdine University Orchestra in Malibu, CA with Tony Cason conducting.

The Greensburg Junior High School 8th Grade Band of 2006 premiered a piece commissioned by their band director, Nick Parcell, entitled "American Journey".  It was performed for the first time at contest, where they won a first place, on April 1, 2006 .

February, 2006

"Primitive Modern" was performed by horn soloist Brian Kilp on February 19, 2006 at Indiana State University and again at the 2006 Midwest Horn Workshop of the International Horn Society in Stevens Point, WI on February 25, 2006.

The Percussion Plus Project gave two performances of "Concerto for Tuba and Percussion", one at the Chicago Cultural Center on February 26, 2006 and one at DePauw University on February 28, 2006.  Velvet Brown was the tuba soloist.

In concerts at the 24th Annual Concert Band Festival on February 27 and February 28, 2006, Jeff Nelsen played the horn concerto, "The Glass Bead Game" with the University of Montana Band, Steve Bolstad conducting.

November, 2005

Three movements of "Night Visions" were performed on November 5, 2005 by Raymond Harvey and the Kalamazoo Symphony.

The Orlando Philharmonic held a special benefit concert for the victims of the Katrina hurricane on November 9, 2005 on which they performed "Liberty for All", conducted by Andrew Lane.

October, 2005

The Butler Wind Ensemble performed the band version of "The American Dream" on a concert conducted by Dr. Robert Grechesky, on October 2, 2005 at Clowes Memorial Hall.

Orcenith Smith conducted the All-State Orchestra at the Utah Music Educators Association where they performed "The American Dream" on October 8, 2005.

Joe Burnham and Jared Rodin performed "Lament for Two Trombones" at Butler University in Indianapolis on the Butler Faculty Artist Series on October 11, 2005 and at the Chicago College of Performing Arts on October 12, 2005.

September, 2005

June, 2005

Orcenith Smith led the Indianapolis Philharmonic on June 9, 2005 when they performed "Waltz of the Animals", a narrated children's piece.

April, 2005

String Quartet No. 1 was commissioned and premiered by the New Century Quartet on April 4, 2005 at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on the campus of the University of Indianapolis, where Jim Beckel is Professor of Trombone.

"Fantasy after Schubert" was featured on 18 Discovery Educational Concerts with the Indianapolis Symphony between April 13 and May 13, 2005.  Neal Gittleman was the conductor for these concerts and Linda Noble was the administrator in charge of planning the concerts and distributing workshop materials to the schools for "pre-educating" the students who attended the concerts.

The band version of "Make a Joyful Noise" was performed by the Indiana Wind Symphony with Charles Conrad conducting on April 17, 2005.

"Primitive Modern", a work for horn and recorded sounds, was played by Kent Leslie.  He was a guest on a Faculty Chamber Music Recital at DePauw University on April 18, 2005.

Fall and Winter, 2004

The Orlando Philharmonic performed "The American Dream" three times in October of 2004, with Andrew Lane conducting.

"Fantasy after Schubert" was premiered by the Indianapolis Symphony as part of their 75th season celebration for the opening concerts on September 18 and 19, 2004.

"Liberty for All" was performed by the Roswell Symphony Orchestra on September 6, 2004 and was conducted by John Farrer and narrated by Senator Rod Adair.

Thomas Joiner conducted the Hendersonville Symphony in "Liberty for All" on September 2, 2004.  The narrator was Chuck Rowell for this concert.

Kent Leslie, an Indianapolis free-lance horn player,  performed "Primitive Modern" on one of the concerts for the 38th Contemporary Music Festival on November 12, 2004.

"Waltz of the Animals" was performed by the NOVA Manassas Symphony Orchestra in Manassas, VA on 12/4/04 under the direction of James Villani.

Orcenith Smith conducted the Indianapolis Philharmonic in a performance of "Waltz of the Animals" in the Fall of 2004.  Jim Beckel was the narrator.

The University of Indianapolis Band performed "The American Dream" on its "Salute to Veterans" concert November 11, 2004 with Thomas McCauley conducting.

Eldon Matlick performed the chamber version of "The Glass Bead Game" at the Doc Rando Recital Hall in the Beam Music Center, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on October 28, 2004 as part of the Western U.S. Horn Symposium.

Spring, 2004

The DePauw University Wind Ensemble performed "Make a Joyful Noise" twice under the direction of Craig Pare.

Trombone soloists Joe Burnam and Fabio Sampo performed "Lament for Two Trombones" in May of 2004 at the Istitutio Civico Musicale and Piemonte IN Music.

Nancy Joy, horn soloist, performed "The Glass Bead Game" with the Mesilla Valley Concert Band in the Spring of 2004.

Also performing "The Glass Bead Game" was horn soloist Andrew Vercruysse.  He played the piece with the Augustana College Band on 5/13/04.

Hornist Kent Leslie performed "Primitive Modern" twice at Ball State University on 2/6/04, and at Butler University on 3/6/04.  He also played "The Glass Bead Game" on 4/15/04 at Indiana State University.

December, 2003

"A Christmas Fanfare" was performed by the Orlando Philharmonic, Andrew Lane conducting and by The Greater Lansing Symphony, Matthew Savery conducting.

October, 2003

On October 23, "Primitive Modern" was performed by Kent Leslie at the University of Oklahoma.

There were two performances of "The Waltz of the Animals" with the St. Joseph Symphony on October 16, 2003, Debbie Friedman conducting.

September, 2003

A special September 11 concert by the Orlando Philharmonic featured "Liberty for All", with Andy Lane conducting.

The Amarillo Symphony performed "Liberty for All" for their Labor Day concert.  The conductor was Jim Setapen.

A premiere of a new work for horn entitled "Primitive Modern" took place on September 8 at the Gala Opening concert for the University of Indianapolis.  Kent Leslie and Paul Berns were the soloists, with technical assistance provided by Pete Schmutte.

July, 2003

A very special July 4 performance by the Nashville Symphony was broadcast on national television by the A&E network.   The orchestra, with Byung-Hyun Rhee, Conductor, and Barry Scott, Narrator gave a very stirring performance of "Liberty for All" .  Kenneth Schermerhorn, Music Director of the Nashville Symphony, performed "The American Dream" during the fireworks presentation.

Greg Hustis, principal horn of the Dallas Symphony, performed "The Glass Bead Game" at the 'Music in the Mountains' festival in Durango, Colorado on July 22, 2003.

June, 2003

At the Women's International Brass Conference at Illinois State University, Velvet Brown performed "Concerto for Tuba and Percussion" with the Percussion Plus Ensemble on June 20, 2003.

Rob Danforth, principal horn with the Indianapolis Symphony, performed "The Glass Bead Game", at the 35th International Horn Symposium at Indiana University on June 5, 2003.

February, 2003

David Stahl conducted the Charleston Symphony in a performance of "Liberty for All".

The premiere of a new work entitled "Concerto for Tuba and Percussion" occurred on February 18 at DePauw University and February 19 at the Historical Society in Indianapolis.  The performing ensemble was Percussion Plus; Dean Amy Lynn Barber, director, and their guest artist was the renowned tuba soloist, Velvet Brown.

The Air Force Band took the band version of "Liberty for All" on tour during February.

January, 2003

The Baltimore Symphony, conducted by Lara Webber, performed "Liberty for All" for a special memorial concert for Martin Luther King on January 11.  With permission from the Martin Luther King foundation, the Baltimore Symphony was able to use text from Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. for this special performance.

The DePauw University Orchestra, with Orcenith Smith conducting, took "Make a Joyful Noise" on their European tour in January.  All performances took place in Italy in Bagnoregio (1/15), Rome (1/11), and Cremona (1/16).

The brass choir version of "A Christmas Fanfare" was performed by members of the Coast Guard Band at the Midwest Band Conference under the direction of Commander Lewis J. Buckley.

"A Gospel Christmas" medley was performed by the Annapolis Symphony on Dec. 20 and was conducted by Robert Moody.

John Strickler and the Topeka Symphony performed "A Gospel Christmas" medley on the Dec. 11 concert.

The Norwalk Symphony, under the direction of Diane Wittry, performed "A Gospel Christmas" medley on Dec. 8.

November, 2002

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, with Michael Krajewski conducting, performed "A Christmas Fanfare" on November 30.

Grant Cooper conducted four concerts with the Syracuse Symphony, performing "Liberty for All" on Nov. 14 through Nov. 17.

October, 2002

"Make a Joyful Noise" was performed by the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra on October 16, Anne Harrigan conducting.

Stephen Peterson and the Ithaca College Band performed "The Glass Bead Game" on October 15.  The soloist was Alex Shuhan.

September, 2002

Joyce Johnson-Hamilton conducted the Diablo Symphony in a performance of "Overture for a New Age" on September 22.

The Middletown Symphony performed "Liberty for All" on September 2.  Carmen DeLone was the conductor.

"Liberty for All" was performed by the Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Steven Larsen conducting, on September 1.
